Bed Bug Control: Quick Elimination Tips
Listen to the blog audio:

Three Principles for Eliminating Bed Bugs
- High Temperature: Above 50–80°C can kill adults and eggs, making it the fastest lethal method.
- Low Temperature: Freezing at –18°C or below for an extended period can cause bed bugs to die, but household refrigerators may not be reliable.
- Dryness: Dehydrating powders (such as diatomaceous earth) damage the wax layer of the exoskeleton, causing them to slowly dehydrate and die.
How to Completely Eliminate Bed Bugs?
According to the Consumer Council (消委會) "Methods for Bed Bug Control" guide, the following measures can be taken to control bed bugs:
1. Physical Treatment (Fastest)
- Vacuuming: Use a vacuum cleaner to clean the bed frame, corners, and furniture gaps. The Consumer Council recommends adding a small amount of insecticide inside the dust bag to prevent bugs from surviving and escaping.
- Steaming: Use a machine that sprays high-temperature steam of about 80°C, slowly treating along the mattress edges and sofa gaps to directly kill hidden bed bugs and eggs.
- Hot Water Washing: Contaminated clothes, bed sheets, curtains, etc., should be soaked or thoroughly washed in hot water at ≥80°C, then dried at high temperature in a dryer. After treatment, store the items in sealed bags and only return them to their original place after confirming no bed bugs remain.
2. Heat Treatment (Professional)
If the room can be completely sealed, consider introducing dry hot air, maintaining the temperature at 45–60°C, and continuing for at least 1 hour. This method generally needs to be performed by a professional pest control company and is difficult for Hong Kong households to carry out on their own.
3. Chemical Control (Auxiliary)
- Spray insecticides with residual effects in areas such as bed frame gaps, baseboards, and floor cracks to ensure the chemical penetrates hiding spots.
- Use natural diatomaceous earth powder, sprinkling it in gaps and corners where bed bugs frequently appear; the principle is to scratch their exoskeleton, causing dehydration and death.
4. Environmental Prevention
- Regularly inspect and clean furniture to keep the indoors dry.
- Frequently change and wash bedding and clothing, and avoid clutter buildup.
- Avoid purchasing second-hand mattresses or fabric furniture.
- Repair peeling wallpaper and fill gaps in walls and furniture to reduce hiding spaces.
Although bed bug problems are challenging, understanding their causes, utilizing natural enemies like high temperatures and dryness, and combining them with daily cleaning and prevention habits can significantly reduce risks; if faced with a severe infestation, it should be handed over to professional companies for heat treatment or compliant pest control to thoroughly resolve the issue and restore your home to a safe and comfortable state.
