Clean Your AC Filter the Right Way
🎧 Listen to this article

In the scorching summer, air conditioners have become an indispensable home cooling helper for many families every day. However, many people find that the air conditioner gets less and less cool the more it is turned on, and even blows out a musty smell, while electricity bills rise significantly. When encountering these situations, most people's first reaction is that the dust filter is too dirty, so they take it out and rinse it casually. But you may not know that incorrect cleaning habits not only fail to improve air quality, but instead damage the structure of the dust filter, make dust get stuck deeper, and even become a breeding ground for mold. To make the air conditioner perform at its best, you must first understand the importance of regular cleaning and avoid common maintenance traps.
Serious Consequences of Long-Term Dust Accumulation on the Dust Filter
Air conditioners need to draw in a large amount of indoor air during operation, which is filtered through the dust filter before cool air is blown out. If the dust filter is not cleaned for a long time, the thick accumulated dust will seriously block the air inlet, bringing the following related problems:
- Increased power consumption, higher electricity bills: Insufficient air intake will cause the compressor to run at full power for a long time, greatly reducing cooling efficiency. According to power company data, regular cleaning of the dust filter can save about 10% of electricity consumption each year.
- Deteriorating air quality, triggering allergies: A dust filter full of dust, lint, and grease will blow fine pollutants back into the room with the airflow, making it very easy to cause respiratory discomfort or allergic reactions.
- Shortening the life of the air conditioner: Being in a high-load operating state for a long time will accelerate the aging of components and may even prevent condensate water from draining properly, causing mold and malfunctions inside the unit.
For ordinary households, basic cleaning is recommended every 2 to 3 weeks; if the residence is near a road, kitchen, or there are pets at home, the cleaning frequency should be shortened to once every 1 to 2 weeks.

5 Common Mistakes in Cleaning the Dust Filter
Cleaning the dust filter seems simple, but in daily life, many people unknowingly repeat the wrong practices:
1. Wrong rinsing direction
This is the most common mistake. After many people remove the dust filter, they directly rinse it with the water head facing the dusty front side. Doing so instead uses the force of the water flow to push dust and lint deep into the fine pores of the fibers, forming sticky mud and causing the micropores to become even more blocked.
2. Sun exposure or high-temperature drying
Dust filters are mostly composed of a plastic frame and a fine plastic fiber mesh. After washing, if they are placed under the scorching sun to dry quickly, or dried with a hair dryer or heater, strong ultraviolet rays and high temperatures will accelerate plastic aging, making it brittle and even deformed. Once the frame is warped and gaps appear, unfiltered air will directly enter the unit, losing the dust filtration function.
3. Putting it back before it is completely dry
Putting a dust filter with moisture back because you are in a hurry to use the air conditioner is the main cause of mold growth. The inside of an air conditioner itself has very high humidity. "Putting it back while wet" is equivalent to providing a perfect breeding environment for mold and bacteria. It will not only emit a musty smell, but the wet filter will also absorb more dust, forming a vicious cycle.
4. Hard brushing or strong acids and alkalis
When facing stubborn dirt, some people use steel wool or hard-bristled brushes to scrub forcefully, which can scratch or even break the mesh, making the holes larger and losing the filtering effect. In addition, using strong acids, strong alkalis, or chemical agents such as stain removers may corrode the plastic, and chemical residues will also be blown into the room when the unit is turned on, affecting health.
5. Rinsing with water before vacuuming first
Dust quickly clumps into mud when it comes into contact with water. If you rinse directly with water without first removing the surface floating dust, it will greatly increase the difficulty of cleaning.

4 Major Steps to Correctly Clean the Dust Filter
If you want to thoroughly clean the dust filter without damaging the components, please follow the standard maintenance process below:
1. Safely disconnect power and vacuum initially
Before starting, be sure to unplug the power plug of the air conditioner. After removing the dust filter, first use a vacuum cleaner (which can be paired with a soft brush head) to gently vacuum away most of the surface floating dust from the front side of the dust filter (the dust-absorbing side).
2. Rinse with clean water in the correct direction
After confirming that large pieces of dust have been vacuumed away, take the dust filter under the water head and rinse it with room-temperature clean water or warm water from the back side (the dust-free side) toward the front side, using the water flow to push residual dirt out of the mesh from the inside out.
3. Use a neutral cleaner for grease
If the dust filter is stained with kitchen fumes or smoke stains, clean water alone cannot wash it clean. You can use a diluted neutral cleaner (such as dishwashing liquid), or for heavy grease, spray a weakly alkaline kitchen degreaser, let it sit for 2 to 3 minutes to break down the grease, then wipe it very gently with a soft sponge or soft-bristled toothbrush, and finally rinse thoroughly with clean water.
4. Air-dry naturally in a cool, ventilated place
After washing, gently shake off excess surface water, or use a dry cloth to gently blot it dry, then place the dust filter flat or upright in a cool, well-ventilated place to air-dry naturally. Only after ensuring that the frame and the inside of the mesh are completely dry can it be installed back into the air conditioner.
As long as you master the correct maintenance techniques, you can not only extend the service life of the air conditioner, but also enjoy cool and healthy indoor air while saving unnecessary electricity expenses for your wallet.
